It is vacation season and many homeowners will take a vacation, or at least a road trip. You come home to an open front door, a ransacked house, and missing valuables. How did a burglar know you’d be gone? How did they get in? Successful burglars have lots in common — home owners who unwittingly give invitations to robbery.

Porch AreaA sure fire green light for burglars is a few newspapers accumulated on the lawn or porch area. Couple that with the shades are always closed and the lawn is looking a little rugged and any professional burglar will think “let’s have a closer look at this place.” Ask a trusted neighbor (or hire his kids) to pick up the news papers and other things that may accumulate in plain view of passers by driving down your street. If you will be absent long enough for your yard to need a mowing, arrange for your yard service to do it in your absence. If you DIY, hire a neighbor’s teen to do it. They should be glad and thankful to earn a little extra spending money this summer. Then there is social media.

Social media is a tool of thieves. Sure, you trust your friends or you wouldn’t be friends, but you don’t know who the friends of your friends are on facebook or other social media. If you want to inform your friends you will be away on vacation, do not do it on social media, do it in person over a relaxing cold one. When you broadcast your vacation, you’re going to be noticed by thieves. It’s an unavoidable fact of life, assume it.

CGM Home Builders cares about homeowners in the BCS area. We don’t want anyone to be a victim of a home invasion. We’ve gathered a few other security tips so you won’t be a victim of a burglary while you’re enjoying a well deserved vacation, or even just out for some family recreation. Here are few more home security tips you may find useful.

Many homeowners are victims of “robbery by appointment.” If you want to sell an expensive item to strangers, arrange to meet at the parking lot of the closest police station, or similar secure location. A thief will not show and you will know to ignore further inquiries from that party, and you’ll still have your valuables to sell.

Relaxing AreaConsider installing motion-activated lighting within range of all points immediately outside your house, not just the doors. These automatic floodlights cost less than $50 each and will send thieves running. It’s also easy to have a digicam attached to the light if you want to spend a little more. You can hire a pro to install them for you, but installing them is an easy DIY job if the wiring is already handy.

It is advisable that, if you leave a car in the drive, leave it locked, especially if you have a garage door opener. A burglar can use the door opener to open your garage door quickly. Along that line, if you have a tool shed in the back and you leave it unlocked, a burglar doesn’t even need to bring tools to get in your home. Even consider an inexpensive deadbolt for it. Burglars are smart enough to get in your home without your tools, don’t make it easier for them by providing yours. Secure your outdoor tools.
